Ministry of Information and Communications is governmental body of Nepal that manages postal services, telecommunications, broadcasting, press & information and film development in the country.

Contents

Mandate

  • To inform the public about the economic and social activities of the country and promote the democratic culture so as to safeguard and promote the freedom of expression and the right to information of Nepali people and to ensure the institutional development of democracy while upholding the sovereignty, territorial integrity and national independence as well as the dignity of Nepal.
  • To make the communications media efficient so as to make citizens conscious by creating an environment of equality, mutual goodwill and harmony among the various tribes, languages, classes and religious communities in such manner as the people in general may, on the basis of the rule of law, enjoy the benefits of democracy peaceably.
  • To make the communications media active so as to facilitate the protection and consolidation of the basic norms and values of the sovereignty of the people and the National Unity while according top priority to the national interest.
  • To make the information and communications sector active so as to preserve the various aspects of national identity and significance, as well as to secure peoples participation, international cooperation and goodwill in the process of allround development of the nation by creating public awareness.

    • Structure & Departments

    The Ministry of Information and Communications consists of the following three Departments.

  • Department of Postal Service: Postal service is an oldest means of communication easily available at affordable service charge to the people including the most backward segment of the population in the society due to its affordable service charge. Postal service in Nepal was started for the first time with a view to deliver government order and messages through special messengers.
  • Department of Information: It was established to coordinate effectively for dissemination of notices of the Government of Nepal to the general public. It keeps inventory of the publication of newspapers/magazines published in the country. Its main objective is to facilitate creation of an enabling environment for the basic right of information, press & publication as guaranteed by the Constitution of Nepal 2047. Under this department, there are five regional information centers.
  • Department of Printing: Government of Nepal has its own Printing Press. It is primarily a Security Press of Government of Nepal, entrusted to print confidential documents such as: budget speech and yearly budget allocation books of Finance Ministry, annual reports of constitutoinal bodies of Government of Nepal, copies of S.L.C. Examination, trademark labels, certificates, prize coupons, licences, VAT stickers, Nepal gazette besides other highly confidential documents.
