Mike wankum explains the dangers of rip currents


Mike Wankum is a staff meteorologist at WCVB-TV in Boston, Massachusetts an affiliate of ABC. He has been with the station since December 2006. Previously, he was chief meteorologist at WLVI Channel 56 from July 1993 to December 2006. He has won ten Emmys in Boston and one Emmy in Richmond, Virginia. Six awards by the Associated Press-Massachusetts and Rhode Island for Best Weathercast and three Massachusetts Broadcaster Association awards for Outstanding Weathercast. WLVI was sold by Tribune Broadcasting to Sunbeam Television in December 2006.

Wankum is a frequent contributor to the weekend edition of ABC World News Tonight and has contributed to ESPN. In his career he has provided weather reports for several Boston radio stations, including WZLX (100.7), WBCN (104.1), WBUR (90.9), and Kiss 108. He has also provided forecasts for the Boston Herald and BostonNOW. Before coming to Boston, he worked as a chief meteorologist at WTVR in Richmond, Virginia from 1990-1993, and at KTIV-TV in his native Iowa from 1980-1990.

Wankum has served has chairman of the Chernobyl Children Project USA, and has assisted in a number of Boston area charities. Including Boy Scouts of America, Easter Seals, MDA, Tufts-New England Medical Center and the Floating Hospital for Children. As well as local animal shelters and nursing homes. He is a lecturer at area schools.

A graduate of Briar Cliff University, Wankum lives in the town of Scituate, located on the South Shore of Massachusetts. He is a Member of the American Meteorological Society and holds the Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation.
