Life and career

Mike was born in Bielefeld, Germany in 1974, but raised in Evanston, Illinois, just north of Chicago. He came home to Chicago in the mid-1990s after majoring in English and psychology at the University of Dayton, in Ohio.

He played in the local jazz scene with David Boykin Expanse, Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra and Josh Berman Quartet, among other bands. He led the improvisation quintet Loose Assembly and the post-bop quartet People, Places & Things, with whom he recorded several albums on the 482 Music label.

He and cornetist Josh Berman launched the Sunday Transmission series at the Hungry Brain in 2000. He also helped launch the city’s Downtown Sound music series, a free weekly concert program presented in Millennium Park that has featured an eclectic mix of indie rock, world music, and contemporary soul. He’s founding director of the Pitchfork Music Festival, joined the committee that programs the annual Chicago Jazz Festival and since 2013 the owner and director of the performing arts venue Constellation. He’s a member of Chicago’s AACM, where he served as vice-chairperson between 2009-2011.
