Contents

Born in Limerick, O'Connell first played competitive hurling whilst at school at Midleton CBS Secondary School. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of eighteen when he first linked up with the Cork minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 1999 championship. O'Connell went on to play a key part for Cork, and won one All-Ireland medal and three Munster medals.

As a member of the Munster inter-provincial, O'Connell lined out with the team on a number of occasions, however, he never won a Railway Cup medal. At club level he enjoyed a lengthy career with Midleton.

Throughout his career O'Connell made 19 championship appearances. After initially leaving the Cork panel after the 2001 championship, O'Connell made a number of comebacks before eventually retiring prior to the start of the 2006 championship.

In retirement from playing O'Connell has become involved in coaching as a selector with various Midleton club teams.
