Michael Naughton is a reader in Sociology and Law with joint appointments in the Law School and Department of Sociology at the University of Bristol. He teaches in the general area of crime, justice and society and in his specialist area of the miscarriage of justice.

Naughton has written extensively on issues relating to the miscarriage of justice and wrongful conviction of the innocent for leading peer-reviewed academic journals, professional magazines and broadsheet newspapers and is a regular contributor to public debates.

Social work

In 2004, he established the Innocence Network UK (INUK), which was active until January 2015. Under the auspices of INUK, Naughton facilitated 36 innocence projects to be established in the UK, 35 in universities and 1 in a corporate law firm. Naughton is also the founder and director of the University of Bristol Innocence Project, the first innocence project to be set up in the UK in January 2005.
