History
Gordon Companies Inc. was founded in 1977 in Buffalo, New York by David M. Gordon. It was a wholesale company which also operated, at its peak, five stores in the Buffalo area. One of their stores, Dave's Christmas Wonderland, still exists in Cheektowaga, New York and is the largest Christmas store in Western New York, In 2001 while attending Penn State, David Gordon's son Nathan began selling the company's goods online via eBay, selling items one at a time for $10 each. Since Nathan Gordon was still at school, his sister Sarah began running the sales from a small office in the building with David Gordon's wife Paulette. The first online name of Gordon Companies, Inc. was "WPoohandFriends", and specialized in Winnie the Pooh collectibles. After graduation in May 2004, Nathan Gordon moved back home to rejoin the online company and the name was subsequently changed to Merchant Overstock.
