Vila graduated in Physical Sciences from the Autonomous University of Madrid with a doctorate in materials, in December 2003.

She had five years of post-doctoral experience in work funded by an IEF Marie Curie and several national programs of investigation, to develop coatings and deposition of surfaces using physical and chemical steam deposition.

In 2008, she incorporated the work of Ramón y Cajal for research by the faculty of Pharmacy of the Complutense University of Madrid, in one of the European groups of Nanomedice and regenerative Medicine, with the funding of an ERG-Marie Curie Action grant (2008–2010). During this period, she developed material for the reconstruction of the loss of bone mass, with what promised to improve the quality of life of patients with some injuries, and pathologies, as they are the bone cancer or the osteoporosis.

Her work has centred on the design and applications of nanopartícles based on graphite oxide .

In November 2010, she was awarded, with four scientists (Isabel Lastres Becker, Ana Briones Alonso, Elena Ramírez Parra and María Antonia Herrero), with the L'Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science, with an endowment of €15000 to reward the work, for women younger than 40 years, to support woman in the science.

In 2013, she was the main researcher at the University of Aveiro, becoming coordinator of the laboratory for applications of graphite in nanomedicine.

In 2015, keeping her appointment as Professor, in the University of Aveiro, she joined the private company Coating Technologies S.L.-CTECHnano, as Scientific Director.
