Mercedes-Benz M112 engine

The Mercedes-Benz M112 engine is a gasoline-fueled, 4-stroke, spark-ignition, internal-combustion V6 automobile piston engine family used in the 2000s. Introduced in 1998, it was the first V6 engine ever built by Mercedes. A short time later the related M113 V8 was introduced.

Contents

All are built in Bad Cannstatt, Germany except the supercharged AMG C32 AMG, which is assembled in Affalterbach, Germany.

All M112 engines have aluminum engine blocks with a 90° vee angle with silicon/aluminum lined cylinders. The aluminum SOHC cylinder heads have 3 valves per cylinder. All use SFI fuel injection with two spark plugs per cylinder. All have forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, iron-coated aluminum pistons and a magnesium intake manifold. To deal with the vibration problems of a 90 degree V6, a balancer shaft was installed in the engine block between the cylinder banks. This essentially eliminated first and second order vibration problems, see engine balance. A dual-length Variable Length Intake Manifold is fitted to optimise engine flexibility.

E24

This is a 2.4 version of the M112 and it was used from 1998 to 2000. After 2000 It was replaced by the E26. The engine produces 168 bhp between 5500 and 6000 rpm and 225 n/m torque between 3000 and 5500 rpm.

Applications

  • 1998-2000 C240
  • 1998-2000 CLK240
  • 1998-200 E240
  • E26

The E26 is a 2.6 L (2597 cc) version. Bore is 89.9 mm and stroke is 68.2 mm. Output is 170 hp ECE (125 kW) at 5500 rpm with 240 Nm (177 ft.lbf) of torque at 4500 rpm.

    Applications:

  • 2000–2005 C240
  • 2000–2004 CLK240
  • 2000–2004 E240
  • E28

The E28 is a 2.8 litre version which produces 204 hp.

    Applications:

  • 1998–2000 C280
  • 1998–2006 S280
  • E32

The E32 is a 3.2 L (3199 cc) version. Bore remains at 89.9 mm but the engine is stroked to 84 mm. Output is 218 hp ECE (160 kW) to 224 hp ECE (165 kW) at 5700 rpm with 315 Nm (232 ft.lbf) of torque at 3000-4800 rpm. It has fracture-split forged steel connecting rods.

    Applications:

  • 1998–2004 C320
  • 1998–2004 E320
  • 1998–2005 S320

  • 1998–2005 CLK320
  • 1998–2003 SLK320
  • 2003–2008 Chrysler Crossfire
  • C32 AMG

The C32 AMG is a special version of the 3.2 L (3199 cc) C320, fitted with a helical twin-screw supercharger and water-to-air intercooler. The supercharger was developed in conjunction with IHI and features Teflon-coated rotors producing overall boost of 14.5 psi (1 bar). Output is 354 hp ECE (260 kW) at 6100 rpm with 332 ft.lbf (450 Nm) of torque at 3000-4600 rpm.

    Applications:

  • 2001–2003 C32 AMG
  • 2001–2003 SLK32 AMG
  • 2005–2006 Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6
  • E37

The E37 is a 3.7 L (3724 cc) version. It retains the 84 mm stroke of the E320 but is bored to 97 mm. Output is 235 hp ECE (173 kW) to 245 ECE (180 kW) at 5750 rpm with 254 ft.lbf (344 Nm) of torque at 3000-4500 rpm.
