Early and personal life
Penn was born, Melanie Grayson Penn, on May 6, 1980, in Virginia, where she was brought up in a Christian home environment, while still considering herself to be "'a bit of a lost soul'". She relocated to New York City circa 2000, where she witnessed the twin towers collapse from her apartment buildings roof in the East Village, while this had a profound impact on her life. She heard some sermons preached by Tim Keller, where she would eventually join his congregation and be a worship leader at Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Penn is now the director of marketing, for an organization founded by Tim Keller called Redeemer City to City, where they engage in church planting and handling Keller's books and media.
