History

Mayflower Secondary School began in 1981 with Wan Hussein as the pioneering principal. On 15 July 1983 the school was officially opened by Mr Lim Boon Heng, then Member of Parliament for Kebun Baru. The school was built at a cost of $5.46 million and covers 2.7 hectares.

The departments within the SLB are headed by an Executive Committee (EXCO), which consists of the President, Vice Presidents (Leadership or Service Wing), Secretary cum treasurer and Department heads.

Students are nominated by their teachers, and undergo a rigorous selection camp sometime in April or May of every year. Successful candidates are then invited to join the board in one of the 8 departments.

In addition to possessing leadership qualities, student leaders should possess good character and academic results.

  • Ethos and discipline

In May 1999 the school's Discipline Master told The Straits Times that his biggest problem was catching students smoking. Girls found smoking were made to spend three hours cleaning classrooms. Boy smokers were caned — one stroke on the first occasion, and more strokes subsequently.

The school's website states that, for all serious offences including smoking, gambling, fighting, vandalism or cheating, male students may receive a caning. There is also a system of demerit points for more minor misbehaviour.
