Arnold left home aged 12 in prior to join Dynamo Dresden's academy and moved to VfL Wolfsburg only three years later. He took part of the U19 squad, helping the club to win two youth titles (2009 and 2011).

On 26 November 2011 Arnold made his first-team debut, coming on as a late substitute in a 0–2 loss at FC Augsburg, becoming the youngest player to feature for Wolfsburg's first team with 17 years, five months and 30 days of age.

On 13 April 2013 Arnold scored his first professional goal, netting the first of a 2–2 home draw against 1899 Hoffenheim; he also became the club's youngest goalscorer. He netted again in the following weekend, in a 3–0 success at Werder Bremen.
