Matthew "Matt" James McCall is an American politician who currently serves as the Register of Deeds for the approximate 165,000 residents of Iredell County, North Carolina. McCall is also Chairman of the Iredell County Republican Party. Filing for office in 2010 at the age of 25, he remains the youngest Register of Deeds of the 100 counties in North Carolina.

Contents

McCall is a fiscal conservative, reducing his department's annual budget 43% since taking office in 2010 after defeating a 20 year incumbent. Despite budget reductions, McCall expanded the physical presence of the Iredell Register of Deeds office by opening a second office location in the town of Mooresville, NC. Mooresville, as opposed to the centrally located County Seat of Statesville, is the population center of Iredell County. A change in state law was required in order to open the satellite location in Mooresville. McCall also openly advocated and lobbied in order to establish a Magistrate's office in Mooresville to better serve residents of the southern end of Iredell County. McCall is one of a few handful of other Registers of Deeds in North Carolina to openly criticize the state-wide North Carolina Register of Deeds Association and its practice of holding conferences that are largely underwritten by taxpayers and vendors seeking taxpayer business from officeholders.

On November 2, 2014, McCall was re-elected for a second term as the Iredell Register of Deeds, winning 67% of the vote. McCall won 74% of the vote in preceding Primary Election of 2014. On March 21, 2015, McCall was elected Chairman of the Iredell County Republican Party. McCall assembled a slate of candidates who also won every seat up for election.

On June 3, 2015, Governor Pat McCrory appointed Matt McCall as a member of the North Carolina State Historical Records Advisory Board. McCall also serves on the Board of Directors and Finance Committee of Partners Behavioral Health Management, and is also a member of Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifle Association and the Troutman Rotary Club.

On February 24, 2016, The Statesville Record & Landmark reported that Matt McCall is considering running for the newly created 13th US Congressional District.

Early life, education, and early career

McCall was born in Statesville, NC and raised in Mooresville, NC. McCall graduated from Mooresville Senior High School and then attended North Carolina State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English. McCall worked in his family's multi-agency insurance business before becoming politically active. McCall is a Fellow of the E.A. Morris Fellowship for Emerging Leaders, Class of 2010. McCall has served as Chairman of the Iredell County Young Republicans, Vice-Chairman of the Iredell Republican Party, Member-at-Large of the NC 9th Congressional Republican Party and as a consultant and adviser on several local and state-wide campaigns.
