Mathur (Tamil: மாத்தூர்), is a developing residential area in North Chennai, a metropolitan city in Tamil Nadu, India. In October 2011, the erstwhile Mathur village panchayat is merged with Chennai Corporation and it came under the jurisdiction of Chennai Corporation. Though Mathur is annexed with Chennai Corporation it is still remained as a part of Madhavaram taluk in Chennai district. The entire erstwhile Mathur village panchayat is named as ward 19 in Manali Zone of Chennai Corporation.

Mathur is located in North Chennai with Manali in the east and Madhavaram Milk Colony to the South. Other neighbouring areas include Madhavaram, Kosappur, Kodungaiyur.

Demographics
According to 2011 census, Mathur had a population of 27,674 with 14,081 males and 13,593 females. A total of 2,980 were under the age of six, constituting 1,607 males and 1,373 females. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes accounted for 16.57% and .13% of the population respectively. The average literacy of the town was 80.41%, compared to the national average of 72.99%. The town had a total of 6886 households. There were a total of 10,160 workers, comprising 64 cultivators, 97 main agricultural labourers, 79 in house hold industries, 7,871 other workers, 2,049 marginal workers, 24 marginal cultivators, 99 marginal agricultural labourers, 77 marginal workers in household industries and 1,849 other marginal workers. There were a total of 17,514 non workers. As per the religious census of 2011, Mathur had 84.40% Hindus, 6.05% Muslims, 8.72% Christians, 0.17% Sikhs, 0.02% Buddhists, 0.09% Jains, 0.05% following other religions and 0.39% following no religion or did not indicate any religious preference.

Mathur MMDA is primarily a well developed residential area with 5000 plots and more than 100 houses in Lake View Apartments(TNHB). Mathur MMDA has lots of shops in 1st main road and 3rd main road to fulfill the daily requirements of people for their convenience. Mathur MMDA has perfect basic amenities such as proper roads, street lights, metro water supply, storm water management system, underground drainage system, solid waste management, etc.,.

Periya Mathur
Periya Mathur is a developing residential area which has a mixture of houses, warehouses, truck garages. The main road in Periya Mathur is Kamarajar Salai which it leads to the Inner Ring Road.
Description
In the earlier days this area was a small locality comprising the villages Periya Mathur and Chinna Mathur. In those days the people residing in mathur doesnt allow to go through milkcolony madhavaram .MR.K.KASINATHAN (a) TAMILARASAN who is said to be a god father of this village struggle a lot to get permission for this area people to pass through. later this area has been choose by the government to implement cow goat meat market (aadu maadu thotti) this was also stopped by MR.KASINATHAN who struggled a lot for this issues and meet lot of higher officials and explained the problems which would be face by peoples residing in mathur if cow goat meat market is implemented, finally there was again a success so people of this area still thinking him as a godfather even after his death.Following his father MR.KASINATHAN path MR.THAMARAISELVAN EX.MC was fullfilling people needs and helping out this area people in many ways. The arterial roads to Mathur are the Madhavaram Milk Colony Road and the Kamarajar Salai. Due to rapid increase in need for quality affordable residential areas in and around Chennai Mathur became a hunting ground for real estate agents. With the Inner Ring Road becoming functional the area was easily accessible from the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus. Also, with MTC operating more buses from Mathur more people started buying houses in Mathur MMDA.
