Location and surroundings
Kodungaiyur covers a vast area bordering Manali to the north, Korukkupet to the east, Madhavaram Milk Colony and Madhavaram to the west, Perambur to the southwest and MKB Nagar (Vysarpadi)to the south.
National Highway 5 (NH 5) touches this area in southwest at Moolakadai.
Chennai Corporation Limits
Earlier, the ward numbers were 01 (Kodungaiyur West) and 02 (Kodungaiyur East).
In the Expanded Chennai Corporation (200 wards), after delimitation of zones and wards, Kodungaiyur will fall under ward numbers 34, 35, 36 and 37 (all four wards will come under Zone No:IV as per the new expanded corporation limits).
Main thoroughfares
Distances from parts of the city to Kodungaiyur:
Kaviarasu Kannadasan Nagar (KKD Nagar) is a part of 'Kodungaiyur' in the city of Chennai and both (KKD Nagar & Kodungaiyur) are not separate geographical locations (since it is assumed wrongly that they are different localities as name boards of most commercial establishments display 'KKD Nagar, Chennai-118' and very few shops display 'KKD Nagar, Kodungaiyur, Chennai-118').
Chinna Kodungaiyur and Periya Kodungaiyur alone do not account to the Kodungaiyur's total geographical area as they are merely parts of Kodungaiyur.
Dumpyard controversy
Kodungaiyur dumpyard is said to be the largest dumpyard in Chennai city maintained by Chennai Corporation. It has many harmful effects on residents in the vicinity, in violation of MSW Rules framed by Ministry of Environment and Forests. The Corporation of Chennai planned it to close it by 2015 but no work has been done on the ground. Failed promises by government agencies led to the mass protests by the people of Chennai every now and then and initiation of on-line petition which intensified during January 2015 to scientifically close it down and convert it into a park.
Transportation
Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) runs passenger buses to Kodungaiyur from other major parts of the Chennai city. There are 3 Bus terminuses in Kodungaiyur. They are Kaviarasu Kannadasan Nagar (KKD Nagar), Parvathi nagar and Muthamizh nagar.
KKD Nagar
KKD Nagar Terminus is the heart of Kodungaiyur's transportation system, as it is the major and most popular bus terminus here. Though frequent buses are available to Parrys and Central, this terminus is badly in need of more bus services to most parts of South Chennai.
Parvathi Nagar
There is a smaller bus terminus at Parvathi Nagar in North Western Part of the locality. Though there are good number of daily commuters from this area, the frequency of service is very limited (they are timed services) to this terminus as the stretch Kamarajar salai > Thiruvalluvar street > Manali road (from Moolakadai towards Chinna Kodungaiyur) is very narrow with encroachments and unauthorised parking on both the sides of the road making the drivers often feel difficult to drive the bus in this route.
New MTC small bus route (S62) announced which would cater between Manali to Moolakadai via Kodungaiyur. The bus received overwhelming response in as its frequency is 10-15 minutes.
Many residents in Chinna Kodungaiyur, residents east of Manali road go to Kaviyarasu Kanadasan (KKD) Nagar bus terminus and residents west of Manali road goto Arul Nagar (Madhavaram milk clolony) bus stop. Residents of Periya Kodungaiyur go to Moolakadai to catch buses.
Some of the bus routes from here are M46C to CMBT(Koyambedu), M38D to Thiruvottiyur, M116L to Broadway. There are repeated protests for more buses in Kodungaiyur — left unheard by government agencies.
The other smaller terminus is at Muthamil Nagar and the only bus route is M116 to Broadway.
As there is no railway line passing through Kodungaiyur, residents normally go to Perambur (nearest railway station) or Vyasarpadi Jeeva to travel in trains.
