Maroochydore state high school


Maroochydore State High School (commonly abbreviated as 'MSHS') is a co-educational, state secondary school located on Queensland's Sunshine Coast in the town of Maroochydore, approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) north of Brisbane. It has grown from an enrolment of 200 students in its foundation year, 1964, to approximately 1400 today. Considered the central high school of Maroochydore, it is particularly noted for being a Cricket School of Excellence.

    Sporting houses

    Maroochydore High holds annual sporting carnivals including Swimming, Athletics (Track and Field) and Cross Country. The top individual performances are selected to represent the school at higher-level competitions.

    The student population is split up into four sporting houses, each led by two House Captains.

    Gold Badge Holders
    Gold Badge Holders is the collective name given to the body of Year 12 students who have been elected, based on various criteria including: personal achievement, service, popular vote, etc., to certain authoritative and representative positions. These positions include: Girl and Boy School Captain, Girl and Boy School Vice-Captain, President of the Student Council, Vice-President of the Student Council, Secretary of the Student Council, Treasurer of the Student Council, 2 Cultural Captains and 2 Sports Captains, and 16 sports captains and vice captains.

    A Year 12 student serving on any of Maroochydore State High School's committees is titled a 'Green Badge Holder.' These committees currently include the:

  • Student Council
    The Student Council is the representative body of students attending Maroochydore High. The Council convenes monthly to conduct business. Business often involves planning fundraisers, approving grants, acting as a liaison between administration and students, special projects, etc. The Council is composed of School Leaders from Grades 8, 9, 10 and 11. Two students from each class are selected by interview to be School Leaders. The council is presided over by the Student Council Executive, comprising the President of the Student Council, Vice-President of the Student Council, Secretary of the Student Council and the Treasurer of the Student Council.

    Uniform

    The uniform detailed below is currently under review with the aim of modernising its style. The new uniform is expected to be finalised by mid-2009 with a two-year phasing in period.

    Awards Night

    An awards night is held each year in October to reward students for academic, cultural, vocational and sporting excellence and to recognise student contribution and service. Awards include Academic Achievement Awards, Cultural Awards and Sporting Awards, each categorised into Gold, Silver and Bronze.

    Special Awards
    Numerous special awards are received by students on awards night to recognise outstanding achievements and contributions with the support of local organisations. These include: Suncoast Daylight Masonic Lodge Academic Bursary Award, APEX Bursary, Junior and Senior Sports Star of the Year, Citizenship Awards, Art On The Walls, School Based Trainee Of The Year, Maroochydore Returned Serviceman's League Sub Branch Bursary Awards, Cultural Ambassador Award and the All Rounder Awards.
