Mariano Lazcano or Lescano (c.1770–1840s) was an Argentine politician, notary and accountant of the Aduana of Buenos Aires. He had outstanding performance as a government official during the Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata, serving in the Real Aduana of Buenos Aires, presided by Justo Pastor Lynch.

Biography

Mariano Lazcano was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, son of Antonio Lazcano and María Isabel Sánchez, belonging to an Uruguayan patrician family dedicated to trade and government. He began his studies in Buenos Aires and was a graduate of notary and accountant in the University of Saint Francis Xavier.

After finishing his studies he began to work as an official at the aduana of the city. In 1805, Lazcano was appointed official 4° of the accountancy of the customs by Justo Pastor Lynch, the Contador Mayor of Real Aduana de Buenos Aires. In 1807, he was named as officer 1°, serving as an accountant and notary until 1815.

Lezcano was also participated in the defense and reconquest of Buenos Aires, during the British invasions of the River Plate. In 1810 he was incorporated into the Regimiento de Caballería de la Patria, where he served for a brief period as sergeant.

Like other political personalities of that time he was an assiduous reader. In 1817, he obtained a copy of Impreso sobre los seis últimos meses de la América y del Brasil, written by Dominique-Georges-Frédéric Dufour de Pradt.

Mariano Lazcano married on September 14, 1796 with María Dominga Canaveris, sister of the Third Order of Saint Dominic, daughter of Juan de Canaveris and Bernarda Catalina de Esparza. Lazcano and his wife were parents of numerous children born between 1800 and 1817, including Vicente Antonio Lazcano, born on October 30, 1800, María Vicenta Manuela Lazcano, born and baptized (September 12, 1802) the same day of Pastor Jacinto Lynch (son Justo Pastor Lynch and María Roo), María Eusebia Lazcano (1805), goddaughter of Fernando Linera. Dorotea Lazcano (1809), goddaughter of Rafael Ferreyra, Juan José Lazcano (1813), Mariana Romana Josefa Lazcano (1810), goddaughter of Mariano Gache y Escalase (Santander, Spain) and Joaquina Juliana de Avellaneda Fonseca. Ramona Lazcano (1815) and José Silbestre Lazcano y Canaveris, born in 1817.

After the abolition of the Court of Accounts of Buenos Aires, Mariano Lazcano integrated a commission of accounting with the former members of the Court.
