Early life

Margaret Glaspy Margaret Glaspy

Born in Sacramento California, she grew up in Red Bluff California. In third grade she took up the fiddle. She said that it wasn’t until high school that she became “curious about songs, folk songs, and started writing and singing more.” In high school she tried her hand at the guitar and trombone. By the time she was sixteen, she focused upon the guitar. Her family are her “total cheerleaders”. “They’ve been out to visit when they can...and I call them for everything.”

Glaspy was able to get a small grant to study at Berklee College of Music and left rural Northern Central Valley of California for Boston. When the grant ran out after a semester, she stayed in Boston for the music. “People are dedicated to certain clubs,” she said. “There’s a little more dedication in Boston. People there are just music listeners where they have their day jobs and their hobby is to listen to music.” She spent three years in Boston. She became good friends with her then neighbor Bridget Kearney who introduced her to Rachael Price.

As many aspiring musicians, Glaspy moved to New York. She received a residency at Rockwood Music Hall.
