Beginnings

The Marcsmen was formed mostly of Texas State University–San Marcos students with the intention of entering the inaugural Barbershop Harmony Society Youth Chorus Competition in 2008. 28 members took the stage for that contest under the direction of Brent Dunavant. They were awarded the trophy as the overall winner.

Shortly thereafter, the group applied and received a charter from the Barbershop Harmony Society. Since that time, they have followed Dunavant's lead to three runner-up finishes in district competition, sandwiched around a District win in 2012 and a 20th-place finish at the Barbershop Harmony Society's International competition in Kansas City, Missouri in 2011. The group returned to the International competition, placing 13th in Toronto, Ontario in 2013 and again 20th in the 2015 International in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In two of those seasons, The Marcsmen finished second to eventual International winner, The Vocal Majority.
