The Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation, or MAPI, (pronounced MAY-pie) is a premier network of manufacturing leaders that connects industry leaders to better ideas to make smarter business decisions. MAPI accomplishes this mission by hosting educational forums of industry executives to foster the exchange of best practices and cutting-edge business ideas. The MAPI network aims to improve the efficiency, innovation and overall business success within MAPI members' companies.

History

Founded in 1933 as the "Machinery and Allied Products Institute," the original MAPI focused solely on providing industry-level economic research and forecasting. That role continued for over 50 years, as MAPI slowly evolved its work to include policy research and become a national voice for policies which stimulated technological advancement and economic growth in manufacturing and in the public interest. As MAPI continued to evolve, the importance of peer networking grew. Currently, MAPI hosts 24 different "Council" peer networks corresponding to major business functions within manufacturing. These Councils meet regularly to exchange ideas and to develop solutions to common manufacturing and business challenges.

Recognizing the need for advanced research in manufacturing and in the manufacturing economy, MAPI founded a subsidiary research organization in 1993. The "MAPI Foundation" conducts research on the economic impact of manufacturing, including the implications of government policies and the success drivers that keep the industry competitive. The MAPI Foundation's mission is to showcase manufacturing’s impact on the global economy to help business leaders, policymakers, and the general public understand manufacturing’s impact on everyday life.

Councils

MAPI's benchmarking and executive peer networking Councils are currently organized around 24 corporate functions in Finance, Operations, Strategy, Growth, Management, Legal, and IT. All councils are member-driven and respond to the complexity of their global business with access to peer expertise and applied research. MAPI routinely surveys industry leaders and sectors to generate performance analyses, as well as updates on trends, issues, benchmarks, and best practices, all supporting improved member performance. Surveys help members identify best practices and benchmark themselves against an audience of peers on issues as broad as SG&A costs, social media best practices, and sales forecasting. In addition, MAPI hosts a series of annual one-day Forums on cutting edge issues and is noted for its MAPI Executive Summit, a two-day conference for senior manufacturing executives. The Summit features a wide portfolio of keynote speakers, panel discussions and more targeted breakout sessions.

Research

MAPI conducts proprietary research for its membership focusing on data analytics and benchmarking within the manufacturing sector. This applied research provides insight into the practical aspects of business decision-making within a manufacturing environment and is used by MAPI members every day to guide important business decisions.

The MAPI Foundation conducts unbiased research on manufacturing and the manufacturing economy as a whole. The Foundation's Industrial Outlook series demonstrates the impact different factors—technology, policy, and expanding international markets—have on the U.S. economy and within individual industry sectors. In addition, the MAPI Foundation quarterly Economic Outlook is a highly valuable forecast that assists business leaders in guiding current decisions while concurrently developing future strategies.
