It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Ostrobothnia region. The municipality has a population of 5,520 (31 March 2016) and covers an area of 521.30 square kilometres (201.28 sq mi) of which 1,433.95 km2 (553.65 sq mi) is water. The population density is 10.6 inhabitants per square kilometre (27/sq mi).
