Malachy Nugent is a local elected official in Washington, DC He represents the neighborhood of Wakefield, Washington, DC on the DC Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 3F. He assumed office in February, 2014.

Background and Family

Malachy Nugent was born in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in International Relations and German Literature from the University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree in Public Policy from the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Nugent has lived in Washington, DC since 1993. He is married and has three children, all of whom were born and raised in the District and attend neighborhood schools.

Professional Experience

Nugent moved to Washington in 1993 to work on Capitol Hill, first for Congressman Paul Kanjorski (D-PA11) then for Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Harris Wofford (D-PA). Starting in 1994 Nugent worked for several years as the Congressional Affairs Officer for the Africa-America Institute, supporting an educational exchange program for African elected officials. In 1996, he headed to Boston, MA to earn a Master's Degree in Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government.

After graduate school, Nugent returned to Washington, DC to work as an International Economist at the US Treasury, where he deals with economic growth and development policy issues in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. He has also done two overseas assignments for Treasury, representing the United States at the African Development Bank in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire for three years and at the Asian Development Bank in Manila, Philippines for two.

Elected Office

Nugent was first appointed to ANC 3F in February, 2014, when his predecessor moved out of the area and vacated the seat; he then stood for and won the seat outright in the regular election in November, 2014. Nugent represents ANC Single Member District 3F06 in upper Northwest Washington, DC, encompassing the largely residential neighborhood of Wakefield plus commercial areas in Van Ness and Forest Hills Row. His district includes nearly 2,000 single-family homes and apartments, a hotel, two schools, several restaurants (Italian, French, Sri Lankan, American, fast food), a bakery, a bank, and a number of other retail businesses.

Nugent holds the office of ANC 3F Chair, having previously served as Treasurer and Secretary. In his role as Commissioner he also serves as a member of the Murch Elementary School Improvement Team and is the President of the Forest Hills Row Business Association, which he founded with local businesses to enhance community life in and around the retail area known as Forest Hills Row (along the 5000 block of Connecticut Avenue).

On the ANC, Nugent has been an active proponent of pedestrian safety in the area, working to get sidewalks and crosswalks installed along key pedestrian corridors, preserve access to a key pedestrian tunnel under Connecticut Ave, NW, and address safety and traffic concerns associated with new commercial developments in the area. He has also worked with the city and local police to address crime and mitigate parking, traffic, and safety concerns around Murch Elementary School and advance the school's long-overdue renovation.
