Macrocybe titans is a species of mushroom that grows in grassy areas in tropical and subtropical habitats of the New World. Its range includes Mexico, Central America, and northern Florida and extending down to southern Brazil. It is possibly the largest mushroom in North America, and is one of the largest gilled mushrooms. One specimen in Costa Rica measured 39 inches (one meter) across the cap, while another in Chiapas, Mexico was 27 inches (69 cm) in height and weighed 44 pounds (20 kg). Its edibility is not yet known. It apparently lives autonomously in Florida, but in many places it is symbiotic with leaf-cutter ants. It is very large, conspicuous and has a vast range, yet it somehow remained unknown to science until 1980.
