The Macao Gallery Malacca (Malay: Galeri Macao Melaka; Chinese: 馬六甲澳門展館; pinyin: Mǎliùjiǎ Àomén Zhǎnguǎn) is a gallery about Macao in Bukit Peringgit, Malacca, Malaysia. Both Malacca and Macao were Portuguese colonies.

History

The gallery building was initially built before the World War II as a government office. In 2007, Macau Chief Executive Edmund Ho paid an official visit to Malacca. Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam then invited the Macau SAR government to set up a gallery to promote its tourism and culture in one of the historical building in Malacca. In 2009, the Macau SAR Government and Malacca Government agreed on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the management of the heritage building with the purpose of transforming the property into a centre of promotion and exhibition of the culture and arts of Macau. The MoU was signed by Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Fernando Chui.

The building was then underwent renovations and converted into the gallery with the opening was done on 26 June 2012 attended by Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam, Malacca Mayor Zainal bin Abu, Macau Social Affairs and Culture Secretary Cheong U and Macau Government Tourist Offices Director Joao Manuel Costa Antunes.

Architecture

The gallery is housed in a historical preserved two-story English bungalow building with a total built up area of 3,000 m2. Designed and managed by the Macau Government Tourism Office, the building architecture consists of Straits-themed tiles and Siamese architecture. The gallery also houses information counter, small coffee and tea break sitting area, library and multipurpose room.

    The gallery opens everyday in a week except Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. free of charge.
