The Maa Jhanjiri Mangala Temple, or Jhanjiri Mangala Mandir is an ancient Hindu mandir (temple) dedicated to the Goddess Maa Mangala, the presiding deity of the city of Cuttack, in Orissa, India. The temple is one of numerous temples in Cuttack. The temple is located in the area of Jhanjiri Mangala and is known also as Mangala Temple at Jhanjirimangala Square. During the annual festival of Durga Puja, the temple and its area are extensively decorated with different types of lights, bamboo/ply gates, paper triangles, etc. In that time Maa Mangala is to counterfeit in different goddess forms throughout 11 days. People believe that when they face problems with no possibility of solution, that Maa Mangala may help them out of the problems. There are people who alawys believe that they are under the blessings of Maa Mangala. She is worshiped as by Sevayatas belonging to Utkala Brahmins & Malli every day. In Cuttack, people strongly believe Maa Katak Chandi is 'The Living Goddess'.
Mythological Origin
According to legend, the present piece of land, where the holy temple is located, was lying in forest before. It is believed that once a priest used to live in that forest & many time he saw one lady with wearing full of ornaments roaming around the forest. Many times the priest tried to ascertain who she was but he failed. One day he got the chance to know who is she, and when he asked the lady to turn back and to show her face then the lady suddenly turned into a stone. On the same night, The Goddess “Mangala” appeared in his dream and requested him to make a small temple for her. After that the priest and the villagers worshiped the goddess named Maa Mangala. Maa Jhanjiri Mangala named by one person when Maa Mangala Saved him from the high sunny Day when he was going to die by the sun's heat (In odiya Jhanji).
Present Day Temple
The present temple structure was constructed by villagers of the Jhanjiri Mangala area. Now with the help of the area's people & others fund Long time ago the temple was constructed, Bronze Statue of Maa Mangala made & worshiping by the people in that temple. In different Area people use to come for get the blessing of Maa Mangala.
Theft
On 27 December 2015, the temple was broken into by thieves who made off with valuables (gold and silver ornaments) worth 4 or 5 lakh rupees (6,000-7,500 U.S. dollars). A number of small ancient temples throughout Cuttack had been targeted by a gang of thieves over the preceding months. In January 2016, the "robber gang" accused of being responsible, were arrested.
