History
Serenade of the Seas is a Radiance class cruise ship that is owned and operated by Royal Caribbean International cruise line. She was built at Meyer Werft yard in Papenburg, Germany and is registered in Nassau, Bahamas. She completed her maiden voyage on 25 August 2003. Other ships in the Radiance class include Jewel of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas and Radiance of the Seas.
Layout
Serenade of the Seas is a gas-turbine vessel. This system produces higher efficient speeds than other cruise ships, and lower emissions than diesel cruise ships, but its drawback is its higher fuel consumption as well as the demand for higher quality fuel. She is 294 metres (965 ft) long, 32.3 metres (106 ft) wide, has a 8.5 metres (28 ft) draft, and has a cruising speed of 25 knots (46 km/h; 29 mph). There are 12 passenger decks, serviced by 9 passenger elevators (6 of which are glass and either look over the Centrum atrium or outside the ship through a glass wall). The ship holds 2,490 guests and 891 crew. It is powered by two smokeless gas turbines, each able to produce up to 25.25 MW (33,860 hp) of power. There are a total of 1,055 staterooms aboard, 829 of which are ocean view, 589 of those have balconies.
The ship has 10 restaurants and eateries: Reflections Dining Room; Windjammer Café (buffet style); Izumi (Japanese); Giovanni's Table Family Style Italian Restaurant; Chops Grille Steakhouse; Rita's Cantina (Mexican); Park Cafe; Chef's Table; Latte'tudes coffee & snack bar; and 24-hour room service. On the top decks are other services and amenities available to guests: the Day Spa and Fitness Center, Beauty Salon, Solarium (indoor, adults-only, pool area), half court basketball, rock-climbing wall, nine-hole miniature golf course, jogging track, three pools, and three whirlpools.
The ship hosts a 756-person theater (Tropical Theater), outdoor poolside 220 square foot movie screen, 9 story central atrium with aerial Cirque du Soleil type performances in the evening, Casino Royale with slots & table games, 16 bars & lounges (including one non-alcoholic bar in the teens-only Fuel Disco), Card room, Billiard room with 2 self leveling pool tables, a library, two nightclubs (Fuel Nightclub for teenagers, Vortex for 18 and older), Diamond Lounge, Concierge Lounge, an indoor cinema, and an arcade. For children there is a day camp for kids 3 and up and a nursery (Royal Babies) for 6 to 36 month old babies and toddlers, a small pool area with a water slide (Adventure Beach), and the Adventure Ocean Youth Area.
On board there is a conference center, and the ship hosts pervasive wireless internet connectivity at a charge of 65¢ per minute. Guests can also access the internet through the RC Online Internet Center. The ship also contains many shops, a photo and art gallery, business center, and medical center.
Homeports
The Serenade of the Seas sails the Caribbean, departing from its home port of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, during the winter months. During the summer months, Serenade of the Seas sails the Baltic Sea leaving from the home ports of Copenhagen, Denmark, or Stockholm, Sweden. Starting in August of 2016, Serenade of the Seas started sailing out of Boston, Massachusetts until the beginning of October when the ship relocates to back to Florida.
