Background

Lacalle Pou is the middle son of former President of Uruguay Luis Alberto Lacalle.
He has followed his father's political footsteps, and is a member of the National Party.
In the 1999 general elections, he was elected representative for Canelones, being reelected in 2004 and 2009.
Political career
In November 2007 Lacalle Pou was involved in a fight, in front of television cameras, in the Chamber of Deputies of Uruguay with a government deputy, Juan DomÃnguez, and others.
Spokesmen for government and opposition parties subsequently disowned the behaviour in connection with the incident. Discussion of the activities of Tupamaros and a slur on the ancestry of Lacalle Pou were thought to have provoked the violent, televised scenes, but the Frente Amplio and National parties were subsequently at pains to stress what they claimed was the unrepresentative nature of the behaviour among the deputies. (Link, below, to 'Espectador' article of November 6, 2007).
Lacalle Pou's career superficially mirrors that of Pedro Bordaberry, also a son of a former President of Uruguay, who followed his father into politics; however, unlike Bordaberry, he has been less successful in avoiding controversy.
Lacalle Pou is the leader of the political lists 404 (Montevideo) and 400 (Canelones).
Presidential candidacy
On 30 March 2014, Lacalle Pou launched his bid for the presidential candidacy.
On 1 June 2014 he was elected as single right-wing candidate of his party for the presidential elections in October. He was defeated on the second round of presidential election on 30 November 2014.
