Lucknow Mail

The Lucknow Mail is an Indian Railways train running between Lucknow and New Delhi on a daily basis. Its numbered 12229 when starting from Lucknow and terminating at New Delhi, 12230 between New Delhi and Lucknow. It is the most important train on this route and has got an ISO 9000 certification after Bhopal Express. Lucknow Mail is the first Non-AC train of Northern Railway Zone and overall second train to get new German LHB Coaches after Lucknow - New Delhi AC Superfast Express, replacing old ICF Bogie, on 26 October 2016 which gives passengers easy and comfortable journey with less jerks, noise while traveling. The train will have 1,232 berths instead of 1,196. Sleeper class will have 80 seats instead of 72, third AC will have 72 seats instead of 64, second AC will have 52 seats instead of 46 and first AC will accommodate 24 passengers instead of 18. The train will comprise 22 coaches including general class coaches and generator cars. The new coaches will have bio toilets, braille stickers and improved interiors. The train can house large number of passengers in its coaches. The train got number of 10 AC coaches. The several booking classes are AC-1, AC-2, AC-3, Sleeper and General. The full route of the train is electrified, the work between Moradabad and Ghaziabad was finished on 22 January 2016 and now the Lucknow Mail gets an end to end electric loco.

From the Past

Lucknow Mail originally had 29 Up and 30 Down numbers before rationalisation of number schemes. With the new rationalisation scheme the train was assigned with service numbers 4229 from Lucknow and 4230 from New Delhi. In the 2005-06 railway Budget, it was elevated to Superfast category without withdrawing any previous intermediate stops. During the tenure of Mamta Banerjee as Railway Minister a new five digit numbering scheme was introduced and present numbers 12229 and 12230 were assigned to Lucknow Mail.

Journey

The down train (#12230) departs New Delhi at 22:05 usually from Platform 16 and reaches Lucknow at 06:45 the following morning. The up train (#12229) departs Lucknow at 22:15 usually from Platform 1 and reaches New Delhi at 07:15 the following morning.
