Loyola College Gumilla is a coeducational school, primary through high school, founded by the Jesuits in 1965 in Puerto Ordaz, Ciudad Guayana, Bolivar State, Venezuela.

History

Loyola College Gumilla was opened by the Jesuits in 1965. In 1968 it moved to its present location and was given its present name. Since 1980 Loyola Gumilla has been coeducational from kindergarten. In 1978 the night school was added. By 1989 there were 1,727 students. The nuns of Cristo Rey withdrew from the College in 1980. Currently Loyola College Gumilla and an extension school of Andrés Bello Catholic University, UCAB-Guayana, occupy the same campus.

Until 2008 the rectors were all Jesuits: Andueza (1965-1974), French (1974-1979), Odriozola (1979-1983), Lahuerta (1983-1986), Izaguirre (1986-1992), Martinez (1992 -1997), Mora (1997-2008); the first lay rector (since 2008) is Aida Astudillo Mujica. Directors have been the Jesuits Armentia (1965-1967), Andueza (1967-1974), Ollaquindia (1974-1979), Lahuerta (1979-1983), and López Chavarri (1983-1993) followed by lay teachers Nagy (1993-1995), Lanz (1995-2005), Astudillo (2005-2008), Hammerlock (2008-2014), and from 2014 Zoraida Leon de Cisneros.

Activities

Facilities include a theater, chapel, libraries, computer rooms, and laboratories for biology, physics, and chemistry. Sports facilities include basketball as well as soccer and baseball fields. Graduates have received scholarships to play abroad in sports such as men's golf, women's tennis, and baseball.

The College has an active Model UN team.
