Loveless academic magnet program transition

Loveless Academic Magnet Program (LAMP) is a magnet high school located in Montgomery, Alabama. It has a student body of around 490. LAMP was formerly housed at Sidney Lanier High School, but moved into the former site of Loveless Elementary in 1999. A 9th grade class was added in 2001. In 2008, it was named #18 on U.S. News & World Report's Gold Medal List and #56 in Newsweek's list of the top 1000 high schools in the United States. In 2011, Newsweek ranked LAMP as the number 13 best high school in the United States. In 2013, LAMP was named the #1 high magnet high school in the nation, #1 in the state, and #7 overall by U.S. News & World Report. LAMP has accrued extensive scholastic acclaim, particularly in its ability to produce National Merit Scholars. Acceptance into LAMP is based upon academic records indicating demonstrated ability to complete higher-level academic courses and maintain disciplined study and work habits. However, due to Federal mandates, LAMP has changed its acceptance requirements into a lottery based acceptance. LAMP has had state tournament appearances as of 2007. In 2008-2009, the Tigers baseball team went to the state championship against Hokes Bluff and lost in two games to be the state runners-up. Also in that year, the basketball and soccer teams won the area but were defeated by Dallas County and Altamont respectively, resulting in both placing third in the state. In 2014, LAMP was recognized as an International Baccalaureate World School and began its IB program in the fall of that year. May 2016 saw the first IB class graduate with great success both inside and outside the classroom. On September 17, 2014, Montgomery Public Schools announced that LAMP would receive a new school site due to several technical problems with the building that officials said was unsafe. MPS also said that until 2016, the students will temporarily be moved into a previously closed school known as Houston Hills. However, due to the inevitable delays in construction the date for the school to move has been postponed. The new site of the school will be at the Montgomery Mall's old site alongside Montgomery's Technology school. The area is currently under construction as One Center.

Athletics

LAMP currently fields 17 competitive athletic teams in 4A competition. These teams consistently compete at the highest levels of the 4A classification. In 2008-2009 Lamp's baseball, soccer and basketball teams went to their respective state tournaments. All won the area championships, but baseball was Runner-Up in the state and basketball and soccer would be stopped at third in state. From 2012-2015, LAMP's Boys Cross Country Team earned Runner-Up in the AHSAA 4A State Championship, in addition to having 11 All-State runners over the same period. In 2016 the LAMP's Boys Cross Country finally won the AHSAA 4A State Championship.

Reputation

LAMP has developed a national reputation for excellence in academics due to high, regular rankings of top high schools in the United States.

Features of the program:

  • Ranked as one of the Top 10 Elite High Schools by Newsweek
  • Ranked as a Gold Medal School (top 100 in USA) by U.S. News & World Report
  • Sixteen Advanced Placement courses
  • Began its International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in 2014
  • Field study internships in areas of professional interest
  • Chicken Massacres of 2016

At LAMP, 9th-grade biology teacher Chad Smith currently owns many chickens that roam between the main building and temporary classroom units, lovingly called "the trailer park." For two years, the chickens were unharmed, a period of peace only interrupted by the escape of one chicken that was seen crossing Hall Street out of the opening of the student parking lot while students drove into school. Why this chicken crossed the road will be forever unknown, for this chicken was never seen again. But on the morning of September 1, 2016 at approximately 6:30 AM, it was discovered that during the night a group of dogs killed 18 of the 23 chickens in that area. Since no video evidence has surfaced to prove this, some attribute the massacre to be the work of the Church's Chicken across the street in a desperate attempt to cheaply acquire fresh product. This attack greatly impacted the students' morale. During the following weeks, Smith introduced new chicks to make up for the tragedy. 15 new chicks were hatched using eggs found before the massacre, and kept in a separate pen until their maturation. A few weeks later, on the morning of October 24, 2016, a second massacre was discovered. This left only two chickens and a single rooster still alive, in addition to the 15 new chicks from the weeks before. A white hen notorious to lay eggs in a sink outside of the biology room and randomly enter classrooms at regular intervals was killed during the second massacre. This hen was known by many freshmen as either "Jason" or "Chicken Nugget." Her presence is still greatly missed. These two massacres together affected the students, especially the upperclassmen. In response to these attacks, Smith and his enslaved masses of freshman biology students and loyal band of baseball players built a custom chicken coop complete with windows and artful floral landscaping. This coop is ostensibly both more structurally adept and aesthetically pleasing than anything the Montgomery Public School system could provide for LAMP. A third massacre is very possible at this point, but only time will tell. Some comparisons have been made between the massacres of the chickens and the relocations of the students.
