Company history

Lionel Dufour founded Louisiana Lightning in 2011 and its distillery is based in Amite City, Louisiana. It is distilled in South Louisiana, an area that is traditionally known for its production of rum. Known by its full name Louisiana Lightning Clear Sour Mash Whiskey, it was first released in 2014 as an un-aged whiskey. Co-founder Matt Dufour stated in an interview that at the time of the whiskeys launch, that there were "no Louisiana-made whiskey on the market." However, this statement was not true, as New Orleans distillery Atelier Vie was the first distillery in Louisiana to release a whiskey since Prohibition, with the release of their Riz, Louisiana Rice Whiskey, on June 28, 2013. The distillery sold 1,000 cases during its first year on the market. It is also one of the only whiskeys to be produced in Louisiana since the Prohibition.

According to The Times-Picayune, it was the second of three major whiskeys to be distilled in the state, with LA 1 Whiskey following shortly after in 2014. The three whiskeys were described by The Times-Picayune as a whiskey renaissance for the state of Louisiana.

Production

The un-aged corn-grain whiskey is rated as 80-proof and was first released in 2014. Tastings.com described the whiskey as, "clear. Aromas of roasted corn cob, molasses and burnt sugar with a soft, dryish light-to-medium body and powdered sugar, dried citrus, mineral and white pepper snap on the finish. A lively white whiskey for cocktails."

Recognition

In 2014 Louisiana Lightning won a silver medal at the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition and bronze medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
