History
Louisiana Downs was built by shopping center developer Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., of Cleveland, Ohio, a longtime supporter of horse racing; it was third race track that he developed, along with Thistledown in North Randall, Ohio, and Remington Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Harrah's Entertainment purchased the track in 2002.
The track is home to the Grade II Super Derby, a race run each September since 1980 at the classic distance of 1 1⁄4 miles (2,000 m). The race often attracts winners and top finishers from the American Classic Races.
The Thoroughbred meet takes place from early May through October. A quarter horse meet is held from January through March.
In its first year of operation, more than 300,000 wagered in excess of $23 million. In 1983, 1.3 million fans wagered $224 million in the 125-day racing season.
The casino features 1,300 slot machines.
