Goodwin is the son former first grade player, Matt Goodwin. Goodwin is a former carpenter.Goodwin grew up in the small town of west Wyalong in central west nsw playing rugby league from a young age. Playing for the West Wyalong malleemen and winning a junior premiership. Goodwin went to boarding school in the small town of Forbes representing the school of Red Bend Catholic college.

After a stint at the Sydney Roosters in the under 20s competition, Goodwin took a step back from the city life, and made his way to the town of Albury where he played Rugby league for the Albury thunder in the Group 9 competition, where he had his hand in three premierships and also receiveing best on ground In one of the grand finals.
