Lord Rupert Charles Montecute Nevill CVO DL JP (29 January 1923 - 19 July 1982) was the son of Major Guy Larnach-Nevill, 4th Marquess of Abergavenny and Isabel Nellie Larnach. He married Lady Anne Camilla Evelyn Wallop, daughter of Gerard Vernon Wallop, 9th Earl of Portsmouth and Mary Lawrence Post, on 22 April 1944.

Biography

He was the younger son of Guy Larnach-Nevill, 4th Marquess of Abergavenny, He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Life Guards and was Aide-de-Camp to Sir Brian Horrocks between 1945 and 1947. vice-chairman of the National Playing Fields Association from 1963, and Chairman of the British Olympic Association from 1966. He was president of the National YMCA from 1966 (vice-chairman 1963-1966), and of the Metropolitan Union of YMCA from 1956, and a member of the World Council of YMCA from 1956. Chairmanships included the Invalid Children's Aid Association (1969), and the Sussex Army Cadets (1951-1968). He was a member of the Sussex St John's Council from 1952 (chairman from 1966), and President of the Sussex St John Ambulance Brigade (1961), the South Eastern Area Building Society (1960), the South Eastern Area TSB (1964), and the Sussex St John Ambulance Cadets (1952-1961). He was vice-president of the Building Societies Association (1960), and the Sussex Boy Scouts (1950) and Sussex Boys' Clubs. At one time he fulfilled the role of private secretary for the Duke of Edinburgh.

Lord Rupert was Treasurer to the Duke of Edinburgh from 1970 to 1982 and his Private Secretary from 1976 to 1982.

Lord Rupert was a Justice of Peace of Sussex from 1953 and Deputy Lieutenant of Sussex in 1960. Lord Rupert was High Sheriff of Sussex for 1952-1953. He was a member of the Uckfield Rural District Council 1949-1967, and of the Sussex County Council 1954-1967. He became a Knight of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.St.J.) in 1972.

Personal life

He married Lady Anne Camilla Evelyn Wallop, daughter of Gerard Vernon Wallop, 9th Earl of Portsmouth and Mary Lawrence Post, on 22 April 1944. They had four children and five grandchildren:

  • Guy Rupert Gerard Nevill (b. 29 Mar 1945, d. 5 Feb 1993), Godson of Elizabeth II; he married Lady Beatrix Mary Lambton
  • The Lady Angela Isabel Mary Nevill (b. 2 Jan 1948), married William Keating
  • Christopher George Charles Nevill, 6th Marquess of Abergavenny (b. 23 Apr 1955), married Venetia V. Maynard. They had twins:
  • George Rupert Gerard Nevill (b. 27 Jun 1990, d. 15 Sep 1990)
  • Sophie Alice Augusta Nevill (27 Jun 1990)
  • The Lady Henrietta Emily Charlotte Nevill (b. 21 Jun 1964), God-daughter of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; married Lt Col Timothy J.G.S. Purbrick. They have four children:
  • Rose Geraldine Purbrick (4 November 1997)
  • Lily Anne Purbrick (4 November 1997)
  • Guy Rupert William Purbrick (9 May 2000)
  • May Angela Purbrick (21 March 2004)

    Lord Rupert Nevill died on 19 July 1982 aged 59.
