History

Londonderry Mall opened in 1972 with 85 stores and services. When it opened, it was the largest two-floor enclosed shopping centre in western Canada. Original tenants included The Bay (which still occupies the same spot), Woolco, and a movie theatre. Later, it would expand to include Safeway.

The mall underwent its first major expansion in late 1979, then again in the later 1980s. The mall added a wing to the west, and then to the south, which included Eatons, and the Edmonton Public Library. The mall expanded to 150 stores and services, and increased in popularity.

A renovation was completed in 1990 which saw the opening of a brand new food court in the centre of the mall. The renovation completely upgraded the mall from dark, and enclosed to a completely open, beautiful and spacious atmosphere. In the late 1990s, Eatons closed, and left an empty space. Save-On-Foods took that spot and is still there today.

2012 marked the 40th anniversary of the malls opening. The mall launched a large campaign around the anniversary, and hosted events such as contests and outdoor movie nights. The main contest was titled '40 Days Of Giveaways' and at the end a car was given away.

In late 2013, the relocation and closing of many major tenants and small stores left the mall with many unoccupied spaces.

In late 2014, the mall announced a complete mall renovation and remerchandising project that will enhance what the mall has to offer.

Renovation

In September 2014, Londonderry Mall publicly announced a renovation and remerchandising project. Some large features will be:

  • Relocation of stores within the mall, and opening of many new stores
  • Relocation of the food court to the west side of the mall with exterior access
  • Renovation of all mall common areas with replacement of all elevators and escalators.
  • This renovation is being designed by MMC Architects and GH+A Design. The renovation is expected to be complete in fall 2017

The first phase of the renovation is now complete, which included the relocation of the food court and the renovation of the mall common areas, completely changing the face of the mall.
