Livy A. Visano is a professor of Human Rights at York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is Director of the Undergraduate Program in the Department of Equity Studies; former Dean, Atkinson College, York University (July 1997- Dec 1, 1998) Chair, Department of Sociology, Atkinson College, York University (1996-7). He was an invited scholar to the Centre for Contemporary Culture (University of Jyvaskyla, Finland), and is currently an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Comparative Sociology. He serves on the Boards of numerous community – based organizations. He has also served as consultant to federal, provincial and local governments and agencies.

Livy A. Visano received B.A. (Honours, in Social and Philosophical Studies), M.A. (Criminology, Centre of Criminology), and Ph.D. Sociology, (Comprehensives: Criminology; Urban Sociology) from the University of Toronto in 1973, 1974, and 1986, respectively.

He has written extensively on delinquency and critical criminology, critical legal hermeneutics, critical cultural theory, critical legal studies, cultural criminology, youth, and ethnographies, penology, anti-racism and law, law and inequality. Crime and Culture: refining the traditions
A book examines the underlying structures of political economy that produce current crime ideologies. An overview and critique of classical perspectives on crime is followed by a discussion on the interrelationship of concepts that are basic to a critical cultural alternative--ideology, hegemony, political economy and the state. The criminal practices of institutions are highlighted, emphasizing how they interact to effectively discipline, dominate and devalue certain elements of the population.
What do they know?”: Youth, crime and culture
In this book Visano takes an unconventional approach to understanding the phenomenon of youth crime. His analysis focuses on the impact of the dominant culture on youth in terms of the often- overlooked issue of youth reflexivity—an interpretive processes through which youths organize their thoughts, feelings, and motives. In particular, he looks at the roles played by ideologies (such as modernity and liberalism) and institutions (such as the media) in shaping youth identity. He also contends that youth crime actually serves the interests of capitalism.
