Location
The university campus is located on approximately 500 acres (200 ha) of land, about 5 kilometres (3 mi), by road, southwest of downtown Lira along the Rwekunye–Apac–Aduku–Lira–Kitgum–Musingo Road.<ref name="Open"/> The coordinates of the university campus are 2°12'34.0"N, 32°52'12.0"E (Latitude:2.209434; Longitude:32.870011).<ref>Google (29 January 2016). History
The university first opened in August 2012 with 100 students. At that time the institution was a constituent college of Gulu University and was known as Gulu University Constituent College Lira.GU (October 2012). In June 2015, the Uganda Ministry of Education elevated the college to university status, effective in the 2016/2017 academic year, which begins in August 2016.<ref name="LKS">Okello, Dickens (26 June 2015).
