It is where, at the Czech Crown Inn, Czech author Jaroslav Hašek wrote a substantial part of The Good Soldier Švejk (books Two, Three, and Four) before he died in 1923, as he lodged there before buying a house across the street. The inn was later purchased by the author's grandson, Richard Hašek, largely for memorial purposes, and Hašek family keeps it in the same state as it was in the times of their famous ancestor (it still operated as a restaurant and boarding house), while the house now hosts an author's memorial museum. Hašek is buried at the Lipnice Old Cemetery.

Lipnice was the location where Václav Havel made his first public appearance in 19 years in 1988, at a folk festival.

There is a notable 14th-century castle at Lipnice nad Sázavou.
