Career

Born in Kirkcaldy, Spence started his footballing career with Cowdenbeath based Blue Brazil Boys Club, before playing youth football with Hearts and Rangers. In 2012, Spence joined Dunfermline Athletic's youth team, playing for their Under-20s squad for the 2012–13. During the 2013–14 season however, Spence began to become involved with the Pars' first-team, appearing on the substitute's bench on a number of occasions before making his debut as an 89th minute substitute for Ryan Williamson in a 0–4 defeat to Rangers at East End Park. His first full start for the side came against league opponents Ayr United, with Spence playing 78 minutes of the one-all draw, before being replaced by Andy Geggan. In total, Spence made 6 appearances for the club during the 2013–14 season, with more than half being made as a substitute.

Spence played a more active role for Dunfermline during the 2014–15 season, playing in the clubs opening fixture of the season, a 5–1 win over Annan Athletic in the Scottish League Cup. It was in the same competition that Spence scored his first goal for the side, in a loss to St Mirren at St Mirren Park. Spence played 31 times for the Pars in the 2014–15 season netting once, with the Pars finishing below expectations in 7th position in League One.

Following John Potter's resignation as manager and the appointment of Allan Johnston, Spence found himself on the fringes of first-team football and made just one appearance for the club in the 2015–16 season, coming on as an 80th minute substitute for Andy Geggan in a 1–4 victory over Arbroath in August 2015. In January 2016, Spence was sent to fellow Scottish League One side Brechin City on a development loan to provide him with more game-time. His time at Glebe Park was a success, with Spence making 13 appearances for the City and scoring 3 goals, including an "outstanding" 35-yard lob against Airdrieonians, which was nominated in April 2016 as one of the club's goals of the season. His contribution helped the side avoid relegation, after they had been bottom of the league for the majority of the season.

At the end of the 2015–16 season, Spence signed a new one-year deal with Dunfermline which would see him remain at the club until the end of the 2016–17 season. After making a handful of appearances for the first-team, Spence returned to Glebe Park in September 2016, signing a one-month loan with Brechin, which was subsequently extended for an additional month.
