History

The Town Council was previously known as Letterkenny Urban District Council. It was the only urban district in existence when Donegal County Council was established in 1899. Local elections are held every five years in the month of June. The last election took place on 11 June 2004. The last election was held due in June 2009.

In November 2012, Letterkenny Town Council passed a unanimous vote of no confidence in Environment Minister Phil Hogan. In November 2013, they planned to protest Hogan's visit to the town to officially open a new wastewater treatment works at Magherenan but then decided against out of respect for those involved in the project - Mayor Paschal Blake and Deputy Mayor Tom Crossan attended to pass comment against Hogan in their speech. The last Town Clerk was Paddy Doherty.

Letterkenny Town Council was abolished in 2014 as part of local government reforms.
