Gameplay
Players control Kai, Zane, Cole, Jay, Lloyd, Wu, Nya, and Dareth in their quest to defeat Ronin. Players can use the tornado of creation to create special builds with all four ninjas. Lloyd can use these spots by himself because he possesses all four elements. Players can ride on dragons to access more of the world. Some segments feature characters riding in vehicles to reach more of the current level. The Ninja can use their elemental powers to solve certain puzzles as well as unlock extras.
Plot
After Garmadon sacrificed himself and was sent into the Cursed Realm, Lloyd left the team for a while to cope with losing his father. Kai, Zane, Cole and Jay, meet a new threat: Ronin, a mercenary who only seeks money (also the person who kidnapped Zane for Master Chen for money) while training with Dareth.
After the Ninja chase Ronin, Ronin begins erasing the Ninja's memories with a weapon known as the Obsidian Glaive, but he is unable to finish because of Sensei Wu, who discovers that only a few years of memories were erased. After talking with the original owner of the Obsidian Glaive, the ninja are told to go to the Toxic Bogs. The Ninja make a potion from a plant in the Toxic Bogs, and Ninja have a vision of obsidian weapons that can restore their memories. After finding the last of the weapons, Ronin uses an elemental crystal on the Ninja. The Ninja fail to stop Ronin from obtaining the other elemental crystals, so Wu takes them to ask Lloyd for help. Lloyd agrees to help the Ninja, and takes them to see his mother for help on what Ronin is after.
Once they find the Primal Fulcrum (Ronin's main target) they discover that Lloyd's mother was under the control of Ronin. Ronin freezes the Ninja, but not before Lloyd destroys the Obsidian Glaive, freeing his mother. After Ronin grabs the last three elemental crystals, Ronin reveals that he plans to use the Fulcrum to bring back Chen from the Cursed Realm. The Ninja chase Ronin, following him into a portal, where the Ninja have a final battle with Ronin. Ronin escapes, but in the process, he knocks the Ninja's weapons out of their hands and into the endless abyss. Once the Ninja escape the portal, it is revealed that the entire game was just a story told by Kai.
In an epilogue, Dareth is shown stealing the Helmet of Darkness, so he can control the Stone Army and use them as his servants.
Reception
The game received generally mixed to positive reviews with Metacritic rating it 70 out of 100, being praised for its humor, gameplay, puzzles, story, levels, and graphics. In the later half of 2015 the game was ported to iOS and Android.
