The first game in the Ninjago series, Lego Battles: Ninjago, achieved worldwide sales totaling over two million units. Due in part to the substantial sales of the first game, a sequel titled Lego Ninjago: Nindroids was announced on 24 March 2014, making it the second video game to be based on the Lego Ninjago line of play sets. At the time of the game's announcement, the publisher did not specify any information regarding the official release date, but it was declared by Nintendo Life that the game would see release in the Summer of 2014. The game's announcement also comes after the success of the 2014 theatrical film The Lego Movie. In February 2014, there also were reports of Warner Bros. debating whether to greenlight a Lego Ninjago film, or hold off on one until after the release of The Lego Movie 2.
