History

The School was founded in 1914 under the name Leehurst convent school. In 1953 it was taken over by the Sisters of La Retraite and took their name. In 1988, the school became a charitable trust, and in 1996 it merged with The Swan School, an independent preparatory school for boys founded in 1930s by Miss Swanton.

The main building, originally a 19th-century family house, occupies a 6-acre (24,000 m2) stretch of land. It has been added to and expanded at various times up until the present day, the newest additions range from a purpose built performing arts centre "The Walker Hall" to a new 12 classroom Prep School giving state of the art teaching facilities and a large area of land, containing an underground reservoir. The school also has access to a pavilion and playing fields in Salisbury Cathedral Close. Altogether the school and grounds cover an 8-acre piece of land.

Roger Leake, is the current Headmaster, who took over the position on the retirement of Rosemary Simmons in 2006.

In 2007 the school changed its name from La Retraite Swan to Leehurst Swan School to signify the end of the association with the Sisters of La Retraite.

In 2015, due to demand for all-through care, 'The Nest' was opened, offering bespoke childcare for children aged 6 weeks to 2 years.
