Laura M. Safran, QC, L.L.B., L.L.M., (born August 11, 1952), is a partner (business rank) in the Calgary office of DLA Piper (Canada) LLP, a full service legal firm focused upon energy and natural resources, infrastructure, development, transportation, and related corporate/finance areas. She specializes in corporate law, commercial law, IP law, aviation law, and technology law. She acts for national and international corporations, major institutions, and government entities in respect of a wide variety of commercial and corporate transactions, including asset and share (finance) sales, asset leasing, asset-based financings, partnerships, joint ventures, outsourcing transactions, and restructurings. Ms. Safran also advises clients on corporate governance issues, public-private partnership (P3) transactions, and has led significant M&A transactions on national and international levels.

Background and education
Safran was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the eldest daughter of Mercia and Carl Safran. After first obtaining a B.A., with distinction, from the University of Alberta (1973), Safran graduated with an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall (1976), then was called to the Alberta bar (1977). She went on to obtain an LL.M. in public international law at the London School of Economics (1978), followed by another equivalent LL.M. at Columbia University (1981). Safran completed the Royal Aeronautical Society Aviation & Transportation Program at Oxford University (1984). She was appointed Queens Counsel (1996), the same year she was called to the British Columbia Bar.
