History
The company was founded in Norway by Julius Espedal in 2006.
In 2008 a budget of 38 mill NOK was presented to investors for development and testing. Färna Invest AB made the first investment. In addition, the Norwegian Research Council and Innovation Norway have supported the project with 5 mill NOK of public grant.
In October 2010, Langlee Wave Power AS opened an office in Aberdeen, UK, because of the high focus to wave power in Scotland. The product named Langlee E1, with a rated capacity of 250 kW, was designed for north sea waves.
In 2010, Langlee Wave Power AS partnered with Aker Solutions to complete the design of power plant Langlee E2.
In 2011, Langlee Wave Power received NZ$1.8 million in funding from New Zealand Government for a 50 kW Langlee E1 test wave power device, that could be deployed off Stewart Island.
In 2012, Langlee Wave Power AS established a subsidiary in the Canary Islands, Spain named Langlee Wave Power SLU, where the cost of energy was 23 cents € / kWh. A new product was developed for the Canarian wave climate named Robusto with a rated capacity of 132 kW. With the relatively soft waves at the Canary Islands, the new design was cheaper to build than the previous E2. An agreement was signed with Club La Santa, Lanzarote. The planned 500 kW wave power park would cover 50% of their energy demand.
In 2014, Langlee Wave Power signed an agreement with Tenerife authorities to develop wave energy farms to the north-west of the island.
Langlee Wave Power AS closed down its subsidiary in 2016.
Technology
The Langlee wave energy converter (WEC) is a floating device utilizing the horizontal wave movements by vertical water wings. The water-wing system had already been used by other companies like AW Energy OY, Finland and Aquamarine Power, Scotland. Langlee Wave Power AS developed a floating device with a pair of water wings with half wavelength distance. Further, a floating construction allows installation farther away from the shoreline. The design is based on standard steel pipes. The technology is patented in 10 countries.
