Lambaré ([lambaˈɾe]) is a city in Central Department, Paraguay, part of the Gran Asunción metropolitan area. With a population of approximately 140,000 inhabitants, it is the sixth-most populous city in the country.

History

Lambaré was founded by Carlos Murphy in 1766. After the independence of Paraguay, its creation was formalized by Law No. 791, of June 5, 1962. The decree of the formation of the new municipality was signed by the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner. The first president of the Municipal Council was Mariano Escauriza.

Toponymy

The name of the town derive from the Guarani language Ambaré, "the land of shadows". The people were known as avambaré, citizens of El Ambaré.

Population

It is part of the ten districts that make up the conurbation of Greater Asunción. The growth of the capital, favored the development of the population of this city, today Lambaré is the sixth-most populous city in Paraguay. According to the 2002 census conducted by the General Directorate of Statistics, Surveys and Censuses Lambaré city has approximately 140,000 inhabitants.
