LaingBuisson is a UK-based healthcare market intelligence provider. Established in 1986, it work with a variety of clients from the independent, private and public sectors, analysing the requirements, delivery and economics of health and social care services.

An independent, and privately owned, organisation, its products and services are based on proprietary primary data while also drawing in a wide variety of additional sources including government bodies, think tanks, universities and related sector partners. As of August 2016, it was the only non-government data source cited by the Office for National Statistics in documents relating to the independent health and care market.

When established by economist William Laing, the organisation set out to support healthcare providers, commissioners, payors, investors and regulators to understand a wide variety of care markets, learning how to access and serve their customers, how to increase profitability and to deliver better quality care through market reports, benchmarking, data sets, consulting, newsletters and conferences.

History

LaingBuisson was set up in 1986 by William Laing, a healthcare economist and commentator on health and community care. He is regularly quoted in the UK media and he is a frequent speaker at sector conferences and in related thinktank committees. He is a Non-executive director of the investment group Octopus Healthcare. Before founding LaingBuisson, Mr Laing worked for the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry and the Office of Health Economics where he was deputy director. He has a BSc Econ from the London School of Economics.

Executive Committee

Henry Elphick was appointed as CEO of LaingBuisson in June 2016. He is also Non-Executive Chairman of Elizabeth Finn Homes, an advisor to the International Longevity Centre – UK, and a Trustee of Turn2us, a national charity fighting poverty in the UK.

Mr Elphick worked in investment banking for nearly 20 years, advising healthcare companies across Europe. He started his career as a lawyer with Linklaters in London, New York and Washington before moving into banking with N M Rothschild & Sons, UBS and Jefferies Group, where he was Joint Head of European Healthcare Investment Banking. He has an MA in Law from the University of Oxford.

Former Secretary of State for Health Stephen Dorrell became company Chairman following the creation of a joint venture between LaingBuisson and the Dorson Group. He is also Chair of the NHS Confederation, the Birmingham and Solihull STP System Board, Public Policy Projects, as well as senior adviser to KPMG supporting the Global Health and Public Sector practice, and a trustee of Place2Be, a national charity focused on children's mental health and well-being. Mr Dorrell was a Member of parliament for 36 years serving as Secretary of State for Health from 1995 to 1997 and the first elected chair of the House of Commons Health Select Committee between 2010 and 2014. He has an MA in Law from the University of Oxford.

Clare Whelan is the Director of Public Policy Projects, a policy forum run by the joint venture which focuses on health and social care. She is also an adviser to KPMG supporting the Local government practice. Mrs Whelan has spent her career in Local Government and was the millennium year Mayor of Lambeth London Borough Council having served on the council for 24 years. She was appointed OBE for services to local government in 2013. She also worked in parliament for 25 years, most recently with Stephen Dorrell, with whom she continues to work as an advisor on healthcare and local government.

Justin Merritt is director of LaingBuisson's publications. He spent a decade as a business journalist on a variety of UK titles specialising in news and feature writing focused on social affairs and local authority matters. He joined LaingBuisson in 2005 as editor of its social care title Community Care Market news before taking on a managing role across the market reports portfolio. Having served as COO since 2011, he became director in 2016. He has an BA (hons) in English from Queen Mary University of London.

Peta Barrett is director of LaingBuisson's events and data departments. She started her career at LaingBuisson in 2007, working across the business, and became a director in 2015. Before joining LaingBuisson in 2007 Peta worked as a facilitator using theatre practices for educational and social development across South Africa and the UK. She has volunteered for Hagit Yakira Dance (2011–2014) and the Girls Friendly Society (2013). Peta has a BA (hons) in Theatre from Rhodes University, South Africa.
