Rufous hare wallaby lagorchestes hirsutus


Lagorchestes is a genus containing all but one of the species referred to as hare-wallabies. It has four species, two of which are extinct:

  • Lake Mackay hare-wallaby, Lagorchestes asomatus (extinct)
  • Spectacled hare-wallaby, Lagorchestes conspicillatus
  • Rufous hare-wallaby, Lagorchestes hirsutus
  • Eastern hare-wallaby, Lagorchestes leporides (extinct)
  • The oldest known fossil of Lagorchestes is an 11,000-year-old one of the extant spectacled hare-wallaby.
