It is part of the Louisiana State University System. The medical school opened in 1969; the first graduates received their degrees in 1973. Since 2016, the LSU medical school in Shreveport has grappled with financial threats to its continued existence. LSU President F. King Alexander said that the troubles date to 2013, when the private Biomedical Research Foundation of Northwest Louisiana assumed control of the teaching hospital as part of then Governor Bobby Jindal's plan to privatize the state charity hospital system. Alexander said that the foundation has not paid hospital bills in full and provides insufficient funding to sustain the medical school.

Feist-Weiller Cancer Center

The State of Louisiana Board of Regents created the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center in 1993 as part of the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport. The center was originally known as the LSU Center of Excellence in Cancer Research, Treatment, and Education.

The center was renamed the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center in 1997 after donations made to honor the Feist and Weiller families.
