The station is the terminus of some peak hour V/Line commuter services, and sidings at the station are used to stable trains.
In August 1990, a number of sidings, crossovers, signal posts and the goods shed and goods platform track were abolished.
The station was upgraded as part of the Regional Fast Rail project, with the platforms re-aligned, the manual interlocking frame and railway crossing gates decommissioned, and new remote controlled computer based signalling provided. Also, as part of this project, the double line between Kyneton and Bendigo was singled.
Disused station Carlsruhe is located between Kyneton and Woodend. Demolished station Redesdale Junction was located between Kyneton and Malmsbury.
Platforms & services
Kyneton has two side island platforms. It is serviced by V/Line Bendigo and Swan Hill line services. In the morning, some trains to Bendigo depart from Platform 1, to allow services in the peak direction of travel to utilise the single 160 km/h track, which was upgraded in 2006,as part of the Regional Fast Rail project.
