History
Before founding Kurgo, the Spatersgrew up in the woods of Vermont surrounded by dogs. One of the dogs, Kitter Spater’s Plott Hound Zelda, became the inspiration for Kurgo. Zelda had a habit of sitting in the front seat of cars, until one trip found her thrown to the driver’s side floor and wrapped around the pedals. Realizing what a danger this was, Kitter conceived of and designed Kurgo’s first product, the Backseat Barrier, to keep dogs safely in the back seat.
Since then, Kurgo has strived to create dog products designed with safety in mind. The company has a line of travel and outdoor products to make travel with your dog as safe and convenient as possible.
Notable Products
Since the development of the Backseat Barrier in 2004, Kurgo has had a few notable product releases:
In 2008, Kurgo partnered with Toyota to advocate for safe pet travel and received patents for the Backseat Barrier and Auto Zip Line, a dog restraint system for the car.
In 2010, a patent was issued for the Wander Collar and Tru-Fit Smart Harness, Kurgo’s first dog car harness.
The Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit Smart Harness, a dog car harness, was released in 2014 and passed crash-testing for dogs up to 130 pounds.
In 2016, the Impact Harness, also a dog car harness, was released and passed crash-testing for dogs up to 130 pounds. In 2016, Kurgo also launched their first line of dog toys, based on Classic Lawn Games such as badminton and horseshoes.
Kurgo Foundation
The Kurgo Foundation was formed in 2013 in the interest of supporting non-profit organizations whose purpose is the assistance of animals when disasters strike. According to their website, it serves as a central information and coordination resource, focusing on identifying non-profit organizations in need of assistance during specific calamities in order to raise the funds and materials needed most. It remains effective as a result of the collaborative effort of an extensive network of animal advocates, lovers, and owners who volunteer their time to give aid to those who suffer from tragedy by no fault of their own.
World's Most Dog Friendly Office
In 2015, Inc. Magazine voted Kurgo’s office the “World’s Most Dog-Friendly Office”. Built out of shipping containers in the Kurgo warehouse, the office contains easy-clean floors, dog cleaning facilities, and an indoor area with fake grass reserved for dog use. A big reason for the focus on dog usage is that the Kurgo design team uses the facility to test new products. This office was featured in other news articles including Boston.com and WMUR.
